Borscht - Hot

6 ounces stew meat, lean
5 cups water
2 cups beets, sliced
1 carrot, grated
1 onion, chopped
1 turnip, cubed
1/2 cup cabbage, shredded
1 ounce tomato paste
black pepper, freshly ground
3 tablespoons vinegar

Place beef and 2 cups of water in a pan. Cover and simmer for 1 hour. Add all other ingredients except vinegar. Cook soup for 1 1/2 hours. Add vinegar before serving; more can be added for a more tart flavor.
